Fredericksburg’s History Experiences

Mary Washington House

George Washington bought the Mary Washington House in 1772 for his mother, Mary. Located on the corner of Charles and Lewis Streets, you can enter this little white house to take a step back in time. Explore the garden and walk into the original kitchen for a view of what cooking was like in the 1700’s. Most importantly, don’t forget to visit their gift shop for tea time accessories, gardening trinkets and souvenirs from this historic home.

James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library

Established in 1927 to house the Monroe family’s historical collections, the James Monroe Museum is the largest collection of the fifth president’s artifacts and documents. A new exhibit, The Era of Good Fashions: Clothing and Accessories of the Monroe Family, recently opened in April. The exhibit makes rarely seen historical clothing belonging to the family available to the public.
